The Solution to the Mind-Body Problem in Searle's Philosophy of Mind
Popelář, Jan ; Kranát, Jan (advisor) ; Moural, Josef (referee)
This paper studies the mind-body problem in Searle's philosophy of mind. It thoroughly evaluates his criticism of the philosophical tradition and the scientifc methodology. As he argues, the former has been misleading us with its dualistic distinctions and the latter has been pushing us into various forms of reductionism. Most importantly, though, it examines his proposed solution to the mind-body problem, his defnition of consciousness, intentionality, subjectivity, and in addition, his famous "Chinese room" argument disputing claims of strong AI proponents. Although this paper does deal with many of the problems his claims and theories inherently contain, it is primarily meant to outline Searle's view on consciousness and its implications in the context of the mind-body problem tradition, rather than to be an extensive elaboration of his one specifc thesis. Comparison of subjective and physiologic perception of experience intensity during repeated stimulation
Polanská, Helena ; Poláčková Šolcová, Iva (advisor) ; Martinec Nováková, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with experiencing emotions and emotional habituation. The aim of the work was to compare changes in subjectively felt intensity of emotional experience and physiological responses during repeated affective stimulation. In the theoretical part were presented the concepts of affective experience and emotional habituation, their biological basis and methods of investigation. The empirical part is devoted to an experiment in which sets of positive and negative picture (IAPS database) and sets of videos in different order were repeatedly presented to group of 124 people. During the presentation were observed changes in subjective evaluation of stimuli and in physiological responses (skin conductance, skin temperature). The habituation process has been tested with regard to the order of stimuli. The results demonstrated that habituation process were present at a subjective level. Also habituation process occured for the physiological indicator, the skin temperature in the part of group that saw for the first stimulus set of positive videos. The habituation of skin conductance did not appear, on the contrary its values increase with a series of repetitions. There is some probability, that subjective and physiological habituation are independent to each other. Previous affective...
The relationship between leisure and spirituality according to Paul Heintzman Ph.D.
JANDOVÁ, Klára
The bachelor thesis focuses on the relationship between leisure and spirituality from the Christian perspective. The aim of this thesis is to create a strong basis for the praxis of Christian recreation practitioners in an inter-culture and inter-religion society. The core of the thesis is an annotated translation of the selected chapters from the English book "Leisure and spirituality". Its author Paul Heintzman synthesizes biblical, historical and contemporary sources of leisure and explores how Christians and the church can address the phenomenon of leisure in contemporary society. The thesis consists of the annotated translation, an introduction to the translation, and a discussion. The discussion compares the results of the annotated translation to the results of Czech authors and to the concept of leisure presented at the Faculty of Theology at the University of South Bohemia.
